our mission:                                                                         to inspire and advance LA's positive urban* future.

LAplus is a new civic voice for those who want to say yes to a brighter future for the LA region.

LAplus -- short for the Los Angeles Planning and Land Use Society -- is a startup nonprofit project of Community Partners.  We aim to be a resource for Angelenos for decades to come. Our first step is to listen, rather than speak, to the incredibly diverse communities that share a stake in our urban future. This work began in 2016, when more than 50 experts, stakeholders and practitioners joined a series of meetings to explore the question, how can we reinvent planning in L.A. with an eye towards the next 100 years?  Our efforts will connect and amplify the incredible work already going on in our City. Specifically, we will:

  • Advocate for a more open, sustainable, and innovative region
  • Empower people and organizations to bring positive urban change to L.A.
  • Bring directness, clarity and evidence to our conversation about land-use
  • Fill a niche that combines research and advocacy
  • Convene accessible, rational, and optimistic conversations about the future of LA and how it can grow and evolve

Planning for LAplus is being led by Mott Smith, Ava Bromberg and Mark Vallianatos, who are assembling a committed advisory board that represents LA's tremendous ethnic, geographical, and sectoral diversity. We look forward to many productive collaborations and continued discussions. *We star 'urban' in our mission because it is important to understand, embrace, and continue inventing urban L.A. We see 'urban' as having three components. One: the physical infrastructure of a city – urban design, sustainable systems, growing transit, and enough housing for all. Second, L.A.’s social environment —diverse places where people from different backgrounds live and interact, and whose participation in the life of the city make it what it is. Urbanity is also an appreciation for the diversity, vitality, and evolving nature of Los Angeles. We see this is part of the DNA of our city, and should be encouraged and celebrated by our citizens, cultivated in our schools, cultural institutions and industries, and expected of our leaders.
